Empowering the Next Generation: How Our Youth Programs Are Building Tomorrow’s 9th Island Leaders

At the 9th Island Chamber of Commerce & Foundation, we believe the future of our community starts with our youth. That’s why we’ve made workforce readiness and leadership development for young people a cornerstone of everything we do.

In Las Vegas the 9th Island we have one of the largest Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities outside of Hawaiʻi. Many of our keiki (children) and young adults face real challenges: limited access to job-ready training, fewer mentorship opportunities, and gaps in pathways to meaningful careers. Traditional systems often overlook these needs.

We refuse to accept that.

That’s why we’ve created free youth certification programs, leadership fellowships, and targeted workforce training designed specifically for NHPI youth and underserved young people across Southern Nevada.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Job-Ready Certifications — Free training in high-demand skills (hospitality, business basics, digital tools) so youth can step confidently into the workforce.
  • Mentorship & Leadership Pathways — Pairing young leaders with experienced professionals through our councils, committees, and 9th Island Leadership Academy.
  • Scholarships & Support — Funding access to education, apprenticeships, and real-world experiences so no one is left behind.
  • Cultural Competency Built In — Every program weaves in Hawaiian values—aloha, laulima (cooperation), and kuleana (responsibility) so our youth grow up proud, connected, and grounded in who they are.

We’re not just teaching skills. We’re building confidence, creating opportunity, and ensuring the next generation of 9th Island leaders can thrive—whether they stay in Las Vegas, return to the islands, or take their talents across the mainland.
